Motivation Defined


Motivation is defined by Ormrod (2008) as an internal state that arouses us to action, pushes us in particular directions, and keeps us engaged in certain activities.
Motivation is an emotion that allows you to have the ability to get yourself to take action regardless of whether you feel like it or not (Motivational-Well-Being.com, 2011). Inaction is the main cause of why people fail or do not accomplish a goal. Actually performing tasks to obtain a goal requires commitment and being able to take action consistently.

With motivation, theorist distinguish between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Ormrod (2008) defines extrinsic motivation as the type of motivation that lies outside of the individual and the task being performed. In contrast, Ormrod (2008) defines intrinsic motivation as the type of motivation that lies within the individual and task. Extrinsic motivation can certainly promote successful learning and productive behavior (Ormrod, 2008).

    You did a wonderful job on your blog. I particularly loved the definition "Motivation is an emotion that allows you to have the ability to get yourself to take action regardless of whether you feel like it or not". I often have trouble finding this type of motivation, especially if it is something I find not to be useful or a waste of my time. I just try to remember, obviously someone thinks it is important, and try to base my work on this. Great job!!
